DORIS GILBERT- THE NEW #GRANDMA MOSES?

As far as we are concerned, Doris Gilbert is an 86 year old “overnight discovery” ! who has been doing great work for 45 years! She specializes in capturing the ever changing moods of the sea with deep feeling. Her skill in relating, on canvas, the beguiling mystique that the ocean provides, is evident in every canvas that she touches.

It’s no wonder that Doris, a native of La Jolla, California, spent the leisure hours of her childhood and early adult life by the sea.

Unlike artists who excel in one media or style, she has won awards of distinction in water color, charcoal, oil, and collage, covering a wide range of subjects.

Notable art critic, Jeanne Good, describes Doris’ style as “Space Realism.” “The explosive breakers, made wild by the wind, foam, the wet pool along the surf’s edge, are all in the context of endless space, which surrounds the realism”.

Acclaim from other art critics like writer Stan Kelly in the Los Angeles Times and Richard Haley at the Ashley Gallery, underscore her immense talent.

“Doris Gilbert’s paintings are of unusual interest, combining orthodox detail with a wholly novel and individual concept.” Richard Haley

Doris Gilbert studied portrait painting in Point Loma, Pierce College, and various private instructors along the way.

In our view, the main difference between Doris Gilbert and Grandma Moses is, Doris has enormous talent and is still painting beautiful renderings as an octogenarian. Go Doris Go!
